Walk with your eyes open, please

  • A reminder to Wellingtonians: don’t step out on the road when a car has the right of way.
A young woman was nearly run over outside Te Papa yesterday when she walked out in front of me. I was on the left-most lane, and travelling slowly due to traffic, so she was all right there, but the next two lanes’ vehicles weren’t. Almost caused an accident as the drivers to my right had to stop to avoid hitting her.
This morning: another young woman crossing Cambridge Terrace from Courtenay Place just stepped out while we had green lights. I had to brake suddenly and swerve slightly into the next lane to avoid hitting her. Thank goodness the reactions of the driver to the right of me were good, too, and that we both had ABS.
We both managed to stop, as did the driver in a BMW behind me who was tailgating. This depended on the luck and reflexes of three motorists. Had the circumstances been slightly different, it would have been a three-car smash, caused by one person in dreamland as she walked.
The trouble is, this shouldn’t depend on luck.
Just keep your eyes open, please! We have been seeing one a day of such incidents this week.
